Olympic Dam — located 560 kilometres north of Adelaide at Roxby Downs — is one of the world’s most significant deposits of copper, gold, and uranium. BHP’s Copper SA division operates three SA mines: Olympic Dam, Prominent Hill, and Carrapateena. As of July 2026, BHP is investing AUD $840 million into a suite of growth projects at Olympic Dam, including an underground access tunnel into the Southern Mine Area, a new backfill delivery system, expanded ore pass capacity, and a new oxygen plant to boost smelter performance.

BHP is simultaneously proposing to expand Olympic Dam’s smelter capacity from 200,000 to up to 650,000 tonnes of refined copper cathode per annum — with engineering, procurement and construction management services contracted to a Fluor-led joint venture for the project, targeting a final investment decision in 2027.
